About you
I’m Laura Oppelt had my first experience with photography at the age of 14, which later became my greatest passion. I’m particularly drawn to wild and rugged destinations such as Norway, the Faroe Islands, and the Alps. Wherever I am, it is the changing light and purity of the outdoors that fascinates me. As I started photographing, I have also come to appreciate nature and landscape much more. In addition to photography, I study geography at the University of Bonn, Germany.
Why do you travel and photograph your journeys?
Traveling means freedom and the choices on how to experience new places and people. Through traveling my eyes open up new perspectives on our world and lives. And it’s through photography that I capture and keep these memories.
What is your favourite thing or item to photograph?
Landscapes with mountains and water, no matter if lakes, rivers, streams, or the ocean.
What’s your go-to travel hack?
Travel simple – the less you carry, the easier the journey.
Got any gear you can’t travel without?
I could never travel anywhere without my lip-balsam!
What destination are you eager to go back to?
Norway is always worth a journey and even if I’ve explored a lot in this country there’s still so much that I haven’t seen! Also, I’d love to return to the French Alps again!
How do you stay safe when you’re travelling?
I make sure to have copies of all relevant documents and try to avoid huge cities – I enjoy traveling in regions with not much except grand landscapes.
What’s the best way to experience a destination like a local?
Try to view this place with fresh and unbiased eyes. Enjoy the simple things and avoid tourist attractions. Try to get in touch with locals, often they are super friendly and kind when you show real interest and respect.
What’s your favourite word in another language?
Rumpetroll – the Norwegian word for pollywog 🙂
When and where are you next travelling?
The next destination is Norway – the Lofoten Islands are calling! After that, I’ll visit Tuscany, Menorca, Madeira, and Namibia – so stoked!
